Van-Tech Custom: Environmentally-Friendly Hydraulic Power
One of Van-Tech’s clients has been creating electrically-powered port spotter trucks for the last three years. Trucks of this type are traditionally powered by diesel engines, so the client needed to adapt many of the truck’s systems to work with this new power plant.
New electrically-driven hydraulic pump was selected, as well as an accumulator, and hydraulic power steering system. A special water/glycol cooling system was also added, including an electrically-driven pump and fan.
Upgrading the spotter truck to an electric power plant gives significant advantages for the environment when, as many ports do, the electricity is generated from a renewable source. Van-Tech’s work on the hydraulic system creates even more efficiency in several ways. The system can transfer power between steering and lifting functions based on priority and need, and the accumulator keeps the electric pump from running close to stall speed (when it’s power draw is highest). These combine to allow the lowest possible power draw and the most efficient operation.
